I think I may have said something to this effect, but here I go again.
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who liked Return of the Jedi. Yes, A New Hope is a classic and such. And Empire Strikes Back is the fans favorite: I just can’t get over that god-awful Robert Newton-impersonating stereotypical piratey Boba Fett from the original that all the fan-boys say is the best. In my humble opinion, Jedi brought the series home in an epic way that none of the other movies could have accomplished.
FYI, for those of you who say that George Lucas made this, who, then, is Richard Marquand?
Okay, there were some points that could have been done better. Personally, I don’t fully like either the original or the re-edit of Jedi. The whole “Lapti Nek” sequence from the original is just hideous to behold. I mean, come on, Frank Oz made Yoda believable as a little puppet, so why the hell does Sy Snootles look like a jacket being pulled up and down on a coat hanger? Conversely, “Jedi Rocks” is an epic face-palm moment - seriously, I face-palmed when I saw it for the first time and my parents come walking in and are like “What the hell is this?” It’s also one of my least fond memories of jazz.
I don’t mind the Ewoks, but what I do mind is that childish little kiddie song “Jub Jub”. And I’m amazed that more fans don’t despise it with me. I mean, you hateJedibecause of the ‘cuteness’ of the Ewoks, so why do you prefer “Jub Jub” over the epic conclusion from the 1st re-edit ofJedi?
All that aside, Jedi was amazing. Luke Skywalker finally grows up and becomes a Jedi (the black suit and the green lightsaber kick ass!), Leia ends up clad in a metal bikini, and the best space battle of the ENTIRE Star Wars saga takes place over Endor. The Rebel Alliance has such interesting characters like Mon Mothma, Admiral Ackbar (is “It’s a trap!” a mockery of Ackbar, calling him ‘cpt. obvious’? If so, I think Legolas beat him to that), and General Nadine: even though they get little screen-time, they’re so intriguing.
Of course, the best part of the whole movie is the Emperor himself. Possibly the best villain of the series, I was amazed when Palpatine held out his hands and started shooting Force Lightning at Luke. That throne scene and the preceeding duel between Luke and Vader is the strongest moment in the entire saga. And John Williams’ score finally comes into its own!
All in all, this was the strongest way to finish the saga.
I agree that it’s the strongest one in the entire saga. Just wish that’ I’d seen more of my imperial favorites.
